Favicon Generator is a free online tool that turns one source image into every icon size a website needs. Upload a square picture, click Generate Favicons, and you get six PNGs from 16 to 512 pixels, along with the HTML tags to paste into your page head.
Most sites need more than the single 32-pixel icon in the browser tab. A phone that saves your page to its home screen wants the 180-pixel Apple touch icon, an installable web app reads the 192 and 512 sizes from its manifest, and older Windows shortcuts still reach for 48. Exporting each of those by hand in an image editor takes longer than the rest of the launch checklist combined.
Your image is decoded and resized entirely inside your browser, and no copy of it is ever sent to a server. That matters when the logo you are testing belongs to a client who has not announced the brand yet, or to a product still under embargo. Nothing is uploaded, so there is nothing to delete afterwards.
Click Source Image and pick a PNG, JPEG, WebP or SVG file. A square image of at least 512x512 gives the sharpest result, and the tool reports back the dimensions it read.
Keep transparency is ticked by default. Untick it if the icon should sit on a solid colour, then set that colour in the Background Colour swatch.
Click Generate Favicons. A preview of each of the six sizes appears, from the 16-pixel tab icon up to the 512-pixel app icon.
Click the button under a preview, labelled with its pixel size, to save that PNG. Repeat for the sizes you need, then upload them to the root folder of your site.
Click Copy HTML and paste the link tags into the head of your pages so the browser knows which icon to use where.

No, it produces PNG files only. Every current browser reads a PNG favicon through the link tags this tool gives you, and has done for many years. A .ico is only needed if you still support very old Internet Explorer versions, or want the bare /favicon.ico path to work with no markup at all.
At least 512x512, and square. Every icon is drawn down from that one file, so the 512-pixel output can never be sharper than what you feed in. An SVG is ideal, because it is a vector and scales cleanly to each size rather than being resampled from fixed pixels.
It is scaled to fit and centred inside the square canvas, never stretched, so the proportions stay correct. The leftover space is transparent unless you untick Keep transparency and choose a background colour. For a wide wordmark, crop it down to the symbol first, since it will be unreadable at 16 pixels either way.
Each size has its own download button so you can take only the ones you need. Bundling them into a zip would mean pulling an extra library in from an outside server, which would undercut the point of a page that works with nothing but your own browser.
That is expected. The line is included because the 192 and 512 pixel icons are meant to be listed in a web app manifest, but this tool only produces the images. Either write a short manifest file yourself, or delete that one line from the copied markup if you do not need an installable app.
In the root folder, alongside your home page, because the copied markup points at paths such as /favicon-32x32.png. If you would rather keep them in a subfolder, edit those paths in the markup to match before you paste it, or the browser will fall back to no icon at all.
