About This Tool

Base64 to Image is a free online tool that decodes a Base64 string back into a real picture. Paste the text, click once, and the image appears with its type, pixel dimensions and file size, ready to download -- text in, image out, one direction only.

The string usually comes from somewhere else: a data URI buried in a stylesheet, an avatar field in an API response, an attachment inside an email source, or a logo pasted into a config file by a colleague. Decoding it is how you find out what the picture actually is. Both a complete data URI and a bare Base64 string work, and the tool identifies the format from the data itself. To encode instead, use the Image to Base64 tool.

Decoding happens in your browser, so the string never leaves your device. That is worth knowing when the data came from a system you do not control: pasting it into a server-side decoder would hand a stranger whatever the image contains, which might be a signature, an ID scan or an internal screenshot. Here it is read locally and forgotten when you close the tab.

Accepts a full data URI or a bare Base64 string with no prefix at all
Detects PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, WebP and SVG from the decoded data itself
Shows the decoded image with its type, pixel dimensions and file size
Downloads with the correct file extension instead of guessing .png every time
Says plainly when the text is not valid Base64 or not a readable image
Decodes in your browser -- the string is never sent anywhere

How to Use Base64 to Image

1

Paste your Base64 data

Drop the text into the Base64 Image Data box. A complete data URI and a bare Base64 string are both accepted, and whitespace is ignored.

2

Decode to image

Click Decode to Image. The picture appears under Decoded Image with its type, dimensions and size. If the text is not valid Base64, the tool tells you instead of showing a broken image.

3

Download the file

Click Download Image to save it with the right extension for its format. Clear empties the box and the preview so you can decode another string.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tool completely free?

Yes! All our tools are 100% free to use with no hidden costs, no registration required, and no credit card needed.

Is my data safe and private?

Absolutely. All tools run entirely in your browser (client-side). Your data never leaves your device and is not sent to our servers.

Can I use this tool offline?

Yes, once the page is loaded, the tool will continue to work even if you lose internet connection since it runs in your browser.

Can I use this for commercial projects?

Yes! All our tools are free for both personal and commercial use.

How do I convert a Base64 string to an image?

Paste the string into the box and click Decode to Image. The picture appears straight away with its format and dimensions, and Download Image saves it. Nothing is uploaded, so even a very long string is handled entirely on your own device.

Does the string need the data:image prefix?

No. A bare Base64 string works on its own, because the tool reads the first few bytes of the decoded data to identify PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, WebP or SVG. When the prefix is present, the type it declares is used instead of the sniffed one.

Why does it say my Base64 is not valid?

Almost always because the string is incomplete or has picked up stray characters. Copying from a wrapped code block can drop the end, and quotation marks or a trailing semicolon from a CSS rule will break it. Copy the whole value without the surrounding syntax.

What file type will the download be?

Whatever the data actually is. The extension comes from the type declared in the data URI, or from the decoded bytes when there is no prefix, so a JPEG saves as .jpg and an SVG saves as .svg rather than everything arriving as a .png file.

Can I encode an image into Base64 here?

No, this page decodes only, text to image. The Image to Base64 tool does the opposite: it takes a file and returns a data URI, CSS rule or img tag. Keeping the two directions on separate pages makes each one quicker to use.

Is there a limit on how long the Base64 string can be?

There is no fixed cap, because nothing is uploaded. Your device memory and your browser's handling of a very large text box set the practical limit. Strings of a few megabytes decode without trouble, and pasting one that long is usually the slowest part.
