About This Tool

Word Counter is a free online tool that counts the characters, words, sentences, and lines in any block of text. Paste your content, and live counts appear immediately below the input box -- no need to click a button just to see the numbers update.

It's useful when you're writing to a strict word limit for an essay, a job application, or a social media caption, or when you need to know if a meta description or product blurb fits inside a character cap before you publish it. Checking the sentence count also helps spot a paragraph that has run into one long, hard-to-read sentence without you noticing while writing.

Everything runs inside your browser, so nothing you paste is sent to a server or stored anywhere. That matters if the text belongs to an unpublished draft, an internal report, or client copy under an NDA -- content you would rather not upload to a site you do not control. The counts update instantly and nothing you type ever leaves your device.

How to Use Word Counter

1

2

Click Count Text

A full breakdown of characters, words, sentences, and lines appears in the Result box.

3

Check against your limit

Compare the numbers to whatever word or character limit you're writing to.

4

Take the result

Use Copy for the clipboard or Download to save it as a .txt file. Clear resets both boxes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tool completely free?

Yes! All our tools are 100% free to use with no hidden costs, no registration required, and no credit card needed.

Is my data safe and private?

Absolutely. All tools run entirely in your browser (client-side). Your data never leaves your device and is not sent to our servers.

Can I use this tool offline?

Yes, once the page is loaded, the tool will continue to work even if you lose internet connection since it runs in your browser.

Is there a character limit?

There is no strict character limit, but very large amounts of text (100,000+ characters) may slow down your browser.

Can I use this for commercial projects?

Yes! All our tools are free for both personal and commercial use.

Does this tool count paragraphs or estimate reading time?

No -- it counts characters, words, sentences, and lines. If you need a paragraph count, use the Lines count as a rough guide, since each line break is treated as a line; this tool doesn't calculate paragraphs or estimate reading time separately.

How does the tool count words when text has extra spaces or line breaks?

It splits the text on any run of whitespace -- spaces, tabs, or line breaks -- and counts what's left as words, so extra spaces between words don't inflate the count. An empty box or text that's only whitespace counts as zero words.

How does the sentence count work?

The tool splits text on periods, question marks, and exclamation points and counts the resulting non-empty pieces. Abbreviations like "e.g." or decimal numbers like "3.5" can occasionally be counted as extra sentence breaks, so treat the sentence count as a close estimate rather than an exact grammatical count.

Does the character count include spaces?

Yes. The character count includes every character you typed, including spaces, tabs, and line breaks -- the same way most word processors count "characters with spaces." There's no separate "without spaces" figure, though most platforms that enforce character limits, like Twitter/X or meta descriptions, count spaces the same way.

Does the download button save the counts or my original text?

It saves the count breakdown -- characters, words, sentences, and lines -- not your original input text. If you want to keep the text itself too, copy it separately from the Input box before clicking Clear, since Download only captures the numbers.

Why would I use this instead of my word processor's built-in word count?

It's faster when you're working with text that isn't already in a document -- a draft pasted from an email, a comment box, or a chat message -- and you don't want to open a separate app just to check a number. The counts also update live as you type, without needing to trigger a manual refresh.
