About This Tool

Image Format Converter is a free online tool that changes a picture from one file format to another -- PNG, JPEG or WebP. Choose the target format, click once, and the converted file is ready to download at the same pixel dimensions, with no account and nothing installed.

Format is usually decided by whatever you need to feed the file into. A site builder that only accepts JPG, a logo saved as PNG that has to shrink for a fast-loading page, a BMP from an old scanner that nothing will open, or a WebP download your desktop software refuses to import. Dropping the file in and picking the format it needs to be takes a couple of seconds.

The file never leaves your device. Decoding and re-encoding both happen on a canvas inside your browser, so nothing is uploaded to this site or to any conversion service -- which is the usual alternative, and the usual reason people hesitate with a contract scan, a signed document, or artwork that has not been published yet.

How to Use Image Format Converter

1

Choose your image

Click Choose Image and pick a PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP or SVG file. Its current format, dimensions and file size appear underneath.

2

Pick the format to convert to

Choose PNG, JPEG or WebP under Convert To. The note beside each option says which one keeps transparency and which one produces the smallest file.

3

Set quality and background

For JPEG and WebP, drag the Quality slider. If you are converting to JPEG, use Background for JPEG to choose what colour replaces any transparent areas -- white by default.

4

Convert and download

Click Convert Image, check the before-and-after line under the preview, then click Download. Clear resets the tool for the next file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this tool completely free?

Yes! All our tools are 100% free to use with no hidden costs, no registration required, and no credit card needed.

Is my data safe and private?

Absolutely. All tools run entirely in your browser (client-side). Your data never leaves your device and is not sent to our servers.

Can I use this tool offline?

Yes, once the page is loaded, the tool will continue to work even if you lose internet connection since it runs in your browser.

Can I use this for commercial projects?

Yes! All our tools are free for both personal and commercial use.

How do I convert PNG to JPG?

Choose your PNG, set Convert To to JPEG, then click Convert Image. Because JPEG cannot store transparency, pick a colour under Background for JPEG first -- white suits most pages. The result is usually much smaller than the PNG it came from.

Can I convert an image to WebP?

Yes. Set Convert To to WebP and convert as normal. WebP files are typically the smallest of the three formats at the same visible quality, it keeps transparency the way PNG does, and every current browser displays it without a fallback.

Will converting reduce my image quality?

Converting to PNG is lossless, so nothing is lost. JPEG and WebP are lossy: some detail is discarded to save space, controlled by the Quality slider, which starts at 0.92 where the loss is usually invisible. Avoid repeatedly re-saving the same file through lossy formats.

What happens to transparent areas when I convert to JPEG?

They get filled with the colour you pick in Background for JPEG, because the JPEG format has no way to store transparency. The default is white. Choose PNG or WebP as the target instead if the see-through areas need to stay see-through.

Can I convert a HEIC photo from my iPhone?

No. HEIC decoding is not built into most browsers, so the file cannot be read here. On an iPhone, setting Camera to Most Compatible in Settings saves new photos as JPEG, and sharing an existing photo by email usually converts it on the way out.

Does the converted image keep its dimensions and EXIF data?

The pixel dimensions are kept exactly as they were. Metadata is not: the picture is redrawn onto a blank canvas, which copies the pixels but leaves camera model, GPS location and orientation tags behind. That is often a privacy gain when publishing a photo.

Can I convert more than one PNG at a time?

Not on this page -- Image Format Converter handles one image per conversion. To turn many PNG files into JPGs in a single batch, with per-file downloads and a ZIP of the whole set, use PNG to JPG Converter instead.
